Temecula Wine Country: new development stirs up feelings

As equipment recently began moving around on the west hills of Temecula, many people had questions.

Photos courtesy of Ambient Communities What the heck is being built?
Who is building it?
When did this get approved??
This land has been the subject of many development proposals for decades. Back in the early 90’s, Broadway producer Zev Buffman proposed a massive ‘Branson Missouri’ style entertainment district. It would have had an opera house, other theaters, shops and a western style vibe. This idea was so unpopular with old school residents that it went to a public vote where it barely passed. Although it passed, other issues arose and Mr Buffman moved on to other ventures. One could argue that Zev was ahead of the times in seeing Temecula’s potential. RIP sir. Here is a link to an LA Times article: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1995-03-10-mn-41167-story.html
This new project is a decade in the making. The property was bought for $25.2 million by Ambient Communities with the intent on the development of residential housing. After the required studies and planning were completed, the project was approved by the city council in late 2017. You can read the very detailed 390 page document here: http://laserfiche.cityoftemecula.org/WebLink/DocView.aspx?id=1627035&dbid=2&repo=Temecula
After the development was approved by the city council, a collection of conservation groups sued the city in January 2018. The lawsuit claimed the southern most part of the development would infringe on the routes of mountain lions native to the area. A judge agreed and halted the project.
After years of negotiations between the various parties, a settlement was reached in October 2020. The settlement keeps 55 acres on the south end as permanent open space. You can read further details here: https://mountainlion.org/2020/10/26/temecula-altair-lawsuit-settled/
Now the project will move forward as planned and approved. The development will consist of up to 1750 homes, condos, mixed use, education (elementary school) and open space w/ trails.
It will also have a ‘western bypass’ road that will connect Temecula Parkway with Rancho California Rd.
Overall, the design elements we found make it look like a very upscale community, similar to Harveston. There are a few photos below of artists renderings.

What a difference one year makes

This morning I was reminded by my phone of a photo I took one year ago this morning. Looking at the photo, it was rather shocking.

One year!! I thought to myself, I don’t think I look like that anymore, right?? So I grabbed my phone and walked over to the same location in our music studio and took an identical shot today.

What principles define how you live?

The principles that defines my daily life are:
Is it fair?
Is it kind?
There are times, like any human, where I fall short of these two statements. I’ve certainly been unfair and unkind to people.
Heck some of you reading this might be thinking – “the hell is he talking about? He’s a total a$$h0le!“
Fair enough.
You’re kind of right.
Puns intended.

What have you been putting off doing? Why?
The thing that I have been putting off – is writing this blog. Seriously, I saw this prompt the other day, and I put it off. And then I put it off one other day. And this morning when I saw the prompt again, I decided, now was the time to let everybody know that I put this off for two full days. LOL

When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

I’d say the first time that I felt like a grown-up was the first evening I rented a hotel room for an overnight trip as an adult. I thought to myself, I’m grown up now, someone will actually rent me a hotel room!
Never mind it was a dumpy Motel 6, that looked similar to this picture. It was no treat, but at the time I thought I was the coolest.

If you had a million dollars to give away, who would you give it to?
This is an interesting one, because with inflation, $1 million is certainly not what it was 15 or 20 years ago. Still, there are a boatload of things that you could do with $1 million.

If I had $1 million tax-free, I would certainly give some of it to my parents, so that they would be extra well taken care of as they age. My daughter would get her student loan paid off and some savings started too.
Some of it I would just have as cash so that I could just give away to people who may need it. Not necessarily the people standing on the corner with their signs, I know there’s a decent portion of those folks who are running scams. But other random people in need, if I could drop $300 or $400 on them, so they could fix their car or get a hotel room, that would be amazing.
I personally love a couple of specific nonprofit organizations and what they do. One of them is Habitat for Humanity. I’ve donated to them every year for quite a few years now. Even if it’s only $50, if it can help folks get housing I’m all for it.
Another nonprofit that I am donating to yearly is the Arbor Day foundation. I love forests, I love trees, and I think there should be more of both.
If you were given $1 million tax-free – what would you do with it? Let us know in the comments.
